About this tool

Sales tax goes by different names — GST in India, Australia, Singapore and Canada; VAT in the UK, Europe and much of the world; Sales Tax in the United States. The calculation is the same everywhere: multiply the pre-tax price by the rate and add it, or divide the tax-inclusive price to extract what was added. This calculator does both directions for any rate, in any currency.

The "Add tax" mode answers: if my price is X and the tax rate is Y%, what does the customer pay? The "Extract tax" mode (reverse calculation) answers the equally common question: a receipt shows a total of X — how much of that was tax? The reverse formula is different from simply applying the rate to the total, and getting it wrong is a common bookkeeping error this tool eliminates.

Rate presets cover the most-searched jurisdictions worldwide: India's four GST slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%), UK VAT (20%), EU standard VAT (21%), Australian GST (10%), Canadian HST (13%), Singapore GST (9%), UAE VAT (5%) and a generic US sales tax (10%). Type any rate into the rate field for jurisdictions not listed — the preset buttons just fill that field as a shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between adding and extracting tax?

Adding tax: multiply the pre-tax price by (1 + rate/100). Extracting: divide the inclusive price by (1 + rate/100) to get the pre-tax amount. The two are not symmetric — applying 18% to a ₹1,180 total gives ₹212.40, not ₹180. This tool does the correct calculation for each mode.

What are India's GST slabs?

India has four standard GST rates: 5% (essential goods, some services), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most goods and services, the most common rate), and 28% (luxury goods, cars). Some goods are zero-rated. This tool covers all four slabs with one-click presets.

Does this work for US sales tax?

Yes — US sales tax varies by state and county (roughly 0–11%), but the calculation method is the same. Enter your specific state or local rate in the rate field; the 10% US preset is just a common example.

Can I use this for business invoicing?

For estimation yes — but use your accounting software for official invoices, as they apply jurisdiction-specific rounding rules. This tool's results are accurate to two decimal places, which matches most tax authority requirements.
