About this tool
The end-of-meal math problem: what's a fair tip, what's the total, and what does each person owe? Doing it in your head after dinner is how someone always ends up overpaying. This calculator settles it in three fields — bill amount, tip percentage, number of people — with the per-person share as the headline answer, tip included.
The one-tap presets cover the common conventions: 10%, 12%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%. What counts as standard varies by country — roughly 15–20% in the US and Canada where tips are a core part of service income, closer to 10% or simple rounding-up across much of Europe, and modest or uncommon in much of Asia. Any custom percentage can be typed directly, including 0% where service is already included.
Everything recalculates live as you adjust — bump the tip a preset, add a late-arriving friend to the split, and the numbers follow. It also shows the tip portion of each person's share separately, which keeps things transparent when one person pays the bill and collects from the rest. No app to install, works offline once loaded, right from the phone at the table.
How to use the Tip Calculator
- 1Enter the bill amount.
- 2Tap a tip preset or type a custom percentage.
- 3Set how many people are splitting.
- 4Read each person's share — tip included, with the tip portion shown separately.
Frequently asked questions
What's a standard tip percentage?
It varies by country. In the US and Canada, 15–20% is customary at sit-down restaurants. In much of Europe, around 10% or rounding up is typical, and service is often already included. In many Asian countries tipping is modest or not expected. When in doubt, check whether a service charge is already on the bill.
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Convention in most tipping cultures is to tip on the pre-tax amount, though many people simply tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small — on a bill with 10% tax, tipping post-tax adds about 10% to the tip itself.
What if a service charge is already included?
Then an additional tip is generally optional. Look for 'service charge' or 'gratuity included' on the bill — common for large groups. You can set the tip to 0% here and still use the split feature.
Can I split the bill unevenly?
This tool splits equally, which suits most casual situations. For itemized splitting (each person pays for their own dishes), calculate each person's items separately and use the tip percentage on each share.
